Meet your IoD Council member: Roger Marsh OBE

Roger Marsh OBE is the Yorkshire and the North East representative on the IoD Council.

Our Council is the guardian of the IoD’s constitution, ensuring that the objectives of our Royal Charter are delivered. As the IoD promotes good corporate governance for UK business, we strive to ensure our own governance meets the highest standards.

Roger is Chair of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the public/private sector partnership promoting the region’s interests on a national and international scale by helping enterprise and business to thrive, a role he has held since 2013. Roger also chairs the NP11 – the influential body made up of the chairs of each 11 LEPs in the Northern Powerhouse.

Additionally, Roger is Chair of The Piece Hall Trust, leading the independent charity tasked with transforming the Grade I Listed building in Halifax. He is also a member of the Council of the University of Leeds and an Honorary Doctor of the University of Huddersfield.

Roger has more than 30 years’ experience of business recovery, turnaround and insolvency experience including practical experience of dealing with challenging business, financial, operational and sensitive management issues within a wide range of businesses.

He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2015 for Services to Business and the Economy.

Roger is a special guest speaker at IoD business events, where he offers insight on issues relating to economic growth, transport and infrastructure in the region.

He said: “The IoD has been supporting and representing business leaders for more than 100 years. My role, working alongside my fellow council members, is to support members, encourage entrepreneurialism and promote responsible business practice for the benefit of the whole business community.

“I am also proud to represent businesses in Yorkshire and the North East by speaking up for this dynamic and diverse part of the world.”

The IoD council comprises 11 members of geographical areas, 13 elected members and the IoD chairman, Charlotte Valeur. It carries out the following responsibilities:

  • to appoint, reappoint and remove the non-executive directors and to determine their independence, having considered any recommendations of the nomination committee
  • to hold the board to account for the delivery of the charter objects and adherence to the laws of the institute
  • to provide critique and opinion to the board on the overall progress of the institute
  • to monitor the board’s engagement with membership and stakeholders
  • to appoint and remove a senior independent council member who will act as deputy chair of the council.
