Be a Mastermind of the business world

Natalie Sykes, Regional Director, IoD Yorkshire & North East

One of the greatest learnings I had whilst going through my Chartered Director training was not just from my esteemed tutors (the outstanding Jo Haigh and Prof Dean Fathers stand out in my mind as if eight years ago was yesterday) or from the content. It was also through the cohort which brought together a mix of sectors, experience and talent.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with people from mixed industry backgrounds who challenge your way of thinking. Breaking down the various issues faced by the group and learning from one another was second to none.

One of our members, Vickie Brown of South Yorkshire-based Distinction Doors has just completed her Chartered Director journey, returning one of the best scores in the country.

In an article for the IoD website, Vickie said a highlight of the process was the connections she made with other directors. She now talks of a “fabulous network of friends who I can call on for professional advice when I need to”.

For Vickie, listening to their varied experiences helped her grow into her role as finance director.

We must remember that learning is not just something that happens during our formative years.

The IoD Academy aims to provide a gateway to lifelong learning and it’s well worth checking out the new website to explore the CPD resources, competency framework and tools for encouraging attendees to stay in touch.

You can hear more on this at our Open House on 10 October, when we throw open the doors of our HQ at Cloth Hall Court, Leeds.

Talking of Mastermind, this is the name of an exciting new working dinner initiative that is being rolled out in Yorkshire on 1 October from 6pm.

Taking the form of a monthly ‘board’ meeting for directors to learn and share in a small group, attendees can expect inspiration and support from like-minded individuals in the stunning private dining room at Iberica Leeds.

All we ask is that attendees bring along their challenges and opportunities and make a commitment to support others.

We plan to roll these events out across the region. After all, we have Masterminds within every town and city’s business community.

  • We have five complimentary tickets for Yorkshire Post readers to join us for our Harrogate breakfast on Cyber Crime and Corruption on 13 September. Email iod.yorkshire@iod.com to claim your ticket and quote ‘Yorkshire Post’. Tickets subject to availability.
