Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?
I have been attending IoD events for many, many years, but only recently joined as a member.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?
I qualified as a lawyer back in 1998, working at a firm in Ipswich. Prior to that I had taken two years out immediately post degree, working for the Law Society, which gave me a valuable insight into business life. In 2000 I joined Eversheds in Norwich (now Eversheds Sutherland) and spent 9 years there before joining Mills & Reeve. I am an employment lawyer, working primarily for employers, but occasionally also for employees, specialising in executive severances, TUPE and large scale change projects. As a partner I lead a dedicated team of employment, pension and immigration lawyers in our Norwich office (as part of our national offering). I love working for Mills & Reeve LLP – a firm that genuinely cares about its people – and providing outstanding service to our clients.
Q: What do you hope to achieve as an IoD Branch Ambassador
To work with excellent people, to provide a voice for the HR/employment community , to gain a greater insight into working with business and to have an opportunity to help influence the direction of travel for IoD locally and on a wider scale.
Q: If you could give your 21 year old self some advice what would it be?
Pause and reflect more often (I am an enthusiastic person - sometimes it can be more prudent to think more before leaping/thinking).
Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
Family, books, films and running (in no particular order)
Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?
I know this is largely metaphorical, but in reality, I am pretty good at switching off - I do my thinking (and where necessary, worrying) during the day. Right now, those are around development of my team and the business, and of course what Brexit will mean for us all.
Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?
Together, we are stronger.
Together, we can share know how, passion and have one voice – for the good of business.
