We all want to get ahead in our careers, but finding the time to make a detailed personal or professional plan can be difficult – especially if you don’t know where you want to go, or how to get there.
The IoD has tools, training and tutors to breakdown the process into three manageable tasks, giving you more time to get started.
1. Take a step back
Sometimes it can be beneficial to go back before you go forwards. Taking a step back and assessing where you are now, and where you’d like to be next year, can help to refine your goals and ensure you are taking regular steps to meeting them. No director is too junior, senior, established or busy to rethink their career path, so don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a task for those in their first board role.
Benchmark yourself and your current skill-set against our Director Competency Framework to understand your strengths and identify the areas of leadership and business you’d like to develop, mapping your goals to your progress, ambitions and trajectory.

2. Find the right fit
If your projected career plan relies on you furthering your knowledge of finance, or on taking a lead on strategic matters, find ways to fit this learning into your schedule with training, webinars, factsheets and workshops. You don’t have to take weeks away from the office to get ahead – CPD works around you. The IoD offers a range of skills and knowledge based courses - based on your Director Competency Framework profile - that can be taken throughout the year at a number of regional locations, making getting ahead the easiest it’s ever been. Training courses can be booked up to six months in advance, allowing you to arrange your professional development around your personal and business schedules, taking the guesswork out of planning your progression.

3. Log your learning
Once you’ve found the right course for your needs, the IoD Academy app is a constant CPD companion, providing bite-sized learning to complement your learning around your IoD course. The app – and online platform – encourages you to log your learning and CPD hours, letting you export your annual report and share it with any other institutes and organisations that you are a member of. The Academy’s self-assessment tool can be used to measure your progress throughout the year, allowing you to retake the survey routinely to chart your growth and learnings and benchmark your success.
