A DAY IN THE LIFE
Ferron Gray, Founder, The Grae Matta Foundation
Ferron Gray, 39, is the Founder & President of The Grae Matta Foundation and also the Founder of Grae Matta, a Student Mental Health Service for Higher Education. He lives in Croydon by himself.
What time does your alarm go off?
It goes off at 6am. I get up drink some water and then go for a run to be back by 6.45am. I have a shower before checking my diary to see what meetings I have scheduled for the day.
What are you responsible for?
I'm responsible for the overall delivery of Grae Matta and The Grae Matta Foundation and making sure that the relevant brands adhere to the targets that are set and met.
Describe your typical day?
If there are no meetings in the morning, then I log in to Workplace (an online work collaboration tool) by Facebook and review the tasks assigned to the team. I contact my COO (Chief Operations Officer) for any urgent updates and then relay what projects I need to be started. After this, I have a working lunch and spend the rest of the day speaking to businesses and organisations trying to secure funding for the foundation.
Most memorable moment?
Forming a partnership with the British Standard Institute to create the UK’s first national standard on how to access mental health services in higher education.
Best piece of advice you've been given?
Richard Branson believe it or not, said: "If someone offers you an opportunity and you don’t know how to do it, say yes, crack on and learn as you go along."
What do you enjoy about your job?
Building something that is going to help so many people in so many industries. It will help validate business models as well as strengthen mental health business models.
What are the worst things about your job?
I’m navigating into a new and unchartered territory, so it can be very very lonely.
Can't think of anything else I would rather do.
Where do you go for personal &/or professional advice?
For professional advice, I talk to the Institute of Directors (IoD). I have a small circle of close friends who I go to for personal advice.
Who is your go-to colleague to get things done?
Aki Benjamin, Chief Operations Officer, our strengths complement each other.
How do you unwind after work?
To unwind you need to stop working. I don’t hahaha! I usually finish late so I watch a lot of cartoons, Family Guy and American Dad while having a glass of bourbon. I like the escapism as it allows my mind to wander. Trying to build what I'm building is very daunting.
How do you stay productive throughout the day?
I do what I do to help others. The thought of someone else losing a loved one to suicide scares me and it drives me to do more. This is my passion and drive, I cannot waiver.
