Tube strikes will bring “transport chaos” back to London – IoD

13 Jan 2016

The Institute of Directors has criticised today’s announcement by the RMT and Aslef of further strike action on London Underground, planned for 26th – 27th January, 15th – 16thFebruary, and 17th – 18th February 2016.

James Sproule, Director of Policy at the Institute of Directors, said:

“Business leaders and ordinary workers in London will be shaking their heads in disbelief that they are facing yet more public transport chaos. Instead of getting on with putting their business plans for 2016 into action, our members now have to worry about how their staff are going to get into work on the three days of industrial action. In a dynamic metropolis like London, which relies on millions of workers being able to travel into the city every day, these stoppages are completely unacceptable.

“It is just not reasonable to subject commuters and business to the threat of ongoing strikes. The Trade Union Bill, currently being debated in Parliament, will mean that strike ballots are only valid for four months. For beleaguered Londoners, this change can’t come soon enough.”

Section 8 (1) of the Trade Union Bill, currently before the House of Lords states that “industrial action that is regarded as having the support of a ballot shall cease to be so regarded at the end of the period of four months beginning with the date of the ballot.” It would not apply to “industrial action, the ballot for which opened before the day on which this section comes into force.”

The original results of the RMT ballot, where their members voted in favour of strike action, released on 30th June 2015, are available here.

The original results of the Aslef ballot, where their members voted in favour of strike action, released on 18th June 2015, are available here.
