IoD response to Scottish Affairs select committee's programme of work

The Institute of Directors welcomes this opportunity to respond to the call for evidence on the work of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee.

For the purposes of this response, we have identified three areas where greater scrutiny of the relationship between Westminster and Holyrood could benefit businesses in Scotland, and indeed across the UK.

There are encouraging signs that the Scottish business community is continuing to grow - particularly the small business community. Since 2000, the number of micro businesses in Scotland has risen by 40% and last year saw over 1000 Scottish entrepreneurs benefit from the Government’s Start-Up Loans Scheme. Schemes like this, as well as important Scottish Government initiatives like the Small Business Bonus scheme, are vital for future economic growth.

We hope that the committee will continue to look at ways in which Westminster and Holyrood can work together to build on this record. Importantly, significant consideration should now also be given to initiatives that will help these new firms to scale-up.
