New GCSE grading must be communicated to employers

student writing in front of windowResponding the GCSE results out today, Seamus Nevin, Head of Employment and Skills Policy at the Institute of Directors, said:

“Well done to all those pupils receiving their GCSE results today. Overall these are positive results and students should be congratulated for their dedication and hard-work. GCSE exams are an important milestone in a young person’s education but whether students got the grades they wanted or not, there are plenty of further study and apprenticeship options available to launch their careers.

“This is the first year of the new 9 to 1 GCSE grading system, designed to enable a more granular differentiation between students. Employers will benefit for these changes. However, any major reform like these needs to be communicated effectively to ensure that employers understand what this means for their recruitment.

“Many businesses, especially SMEs who make up the bulk of UK employment, will only now begin to engage with the changes. That risks disadvantaging students if bosses are confused by the metric. So it is vital for schools to engage with local employers to help them understand the new grades and ensure their students are able to get the best start possible in the workplace.”
