Welcoming the appointment of Sir David Metcalf as the Government’s first labour market enforcement chief, Seamus Nevin, Head of Employment and Skills Policy at the Institute of Directors, said:

“The Government is right to address public concerns over exploitation and black market employment. The IoD will never support the small number of rogue companies who employ illegal workers, or exploit people by paying less than the minimum wage. This is criminal behaviour which is shunned by all honest businesses.”

“The announcement comes on the same day that the All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Integration has called for a plan to improve the English language skills of migrants, increase awareness of UK laws and channel funds to managing the impact of migration. The Government should consider the recommendations as part of a combined strategy to make sure the UK gets the benefits of immigration, while responding to concerns about pressures on wages and local communities.

“Businesses are a part of society, they do not sit apart from it, so practical measure like this to reduce exploitation and improve integration will be welcomed by all responsible UK employers.”
