Chinese New Year of the Rooster Banquet

01 Feb 2017

On 1 February we held our annual Chinese New Year banquet, this time to herald the end of the tumultuous year of the Fire Monkey and to welcome in the year of the Fire Rooster.

The event was held at the Bright Courtyard Club on Baker Street and saw the arrival of almost 200 guests. It was organised by the IoD City China Group, chaired by our Honorary Secretary Mei Sim Lai OBE DL, who personally selected the menu for the dinner.

The evening began with drinks and networking with numerous guests discussing potential UK-China co-operation and business opportunities. During the extensive dinner we were also treated to an exuberant Lion Dance as well some excellent musical performances.

We were also given some traditional guidance on what the year of the Rooster means. Those born in the Year of the Rooster are said to be observant, hardworking, confident, courageous, frank and honest. They are more motivated than others and make their career a priority. Roosters love to get things done and are indomitable in their efforts.

The Year of the Rooster will be a very different year from the very volatile year of the Monkey. The Fire Rooster Year will be filled with big projects such as taller and more space age buildings in the cities of the world. Advanced nations will compete in technology and there will be a fresh plethora of space programmes. With Brexit, the British economy will dip and dive with ongoing uncertainty and the PM Theresa May will continue to face a year ahead of challenges.

The event was kindly sponsored by Locate Jersey, a governmental department responsible for promoting, attracting and retaining inward investment and high value residency in Jersey. Our thanks go also to Daniel Eros Carnio of Oenofuture and Leslie K K Ng of Bao & Noodles for their support on the wine for the event, Guang Lin of Jazz Trading UK who provided Wuliangye, one of China’s top Baiju brands for attendees to try, Maison Samadi for supplying the chocolates for the goodie bags and Grace Bian for providing the Lion Dance performance. Our thanks also go to the wonderful musicians and dancers themselves!
