Chinese New Year Dinner: Year of the Red Fire Monkey

11 Feb 2016

Chinese New Year of the Red Fire Monkey

IoD City held a prestigious Chinese New Year Banquet in the Bright Courtyard Club on 11th February 2016 to herald in the arrival of the Year of the Red Fire Monkey.

This is an annual event of the IoD City China Group, chaired by our Hon Secretary, Mei Sim Lai OBE DL. She specially selected the menu for the dinner as well as the accompanying entertainment.

Chinese New Year in 2016 starts on Monday 8 February 2016. Those born in the Year of the Monkey are said to be clever, innovative, energetic, enthusiastic and lively. They are good problem solvers, quick witted, wily and versatile but could be mischievous, impatient and impetuous.

The Year of the Monkey will be a decisive and confident year to act and take matters into our own hands. However, avoid hasty decisions and be vigilant when opportunities arise. It will be a year to expand and nurture relationships with family, friends and business colleagues and contacts.

In the coming year, the status of events will be changing very quickly so there is a need to think twice before you leap and make changes to your finances, career, business and people relationships.

If you want to have good returns on your investments you will have to outsmart the Monkey. Taking an adventurous path with some caution and setting clear goals are therefore the mantra for the coming months.

The evening commenced with a drinks reception with plenty of networking, especially with people who do business with China, as well as Chinese people in the UK. The reception was followed by a multi-course dinner, refreshments and entertainment.

As in previous years we organised a Lion dance and musical entertainment. The entertainment this year was provided by Chinese Elvis, in the form of TV and film actor, Paul Hyu, one of Britain’s top Elvis tribute acts and the 1st and only Chinese Elvis impersonator registered with the actors’ union, Equity. Paul has worked in Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, USA, Canada and Barbados.

We also held a charity raffle with net proceeds going to The Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch 2016 in aid of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.
