A personal account of the story behind Caffe Nero highlighting the highs, lows, tragedies and triumphs of this remarkable success story and contrasting it with the joys and anguish of taking a tech start up ( from idea to launch and scale up to a national business.

Paul (Pablo) Ettinger 

Paul has a BSc in Physics from Southampton University and an MBA from Insead in France (85J). Following his MBA he spent 13 years in the chemical industry (Courtaulds PLC) latterly developing joint ventures in Asia and running a German acquisition for two years. On moving back to the UK he helped a friend acquire 5 coffee bars which subsequently became Caffe Nero. The business floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2001 and was taken private in 2007. It now has over 790 outlets in the UK, UAE, Poland, Cyprus, Turkey, Ireland and the USA. 

He now works part time for Caffe Nero (International Development and music) and is a founder investor and Chairman of, the UK’s fastest growing community social network which has over 1.5m users. He is also an active angel investor and director of three other businesses; Sweet Freedom,  which has successfully developed and launched ‘free from’ products into many of the UK’s major food retailers, his wife’s medical business and he is also a non-executive director of the family business, Ettinger of London a fast growing  designer/manufacturer of luxury leather goods operating predominantly in Asia. 

Whilst not working Paul mentors young entrepreneurs, skis competitively and plays jazz piano.
