Step to the Top - Morning course 1

Overview

Are you ready and willing to take the step to the board room? People often find themselves presented with the opportunity to become a board director on the basis of either being good at something else (e.g. perhaps at being a senior manager, an accountant or an engineer) or even by accident! Yet understanding what it means to be board-ready is essential to being a capable director.

This interactive workshop will help you to understand the duties and obligations that you will face as board directors. We will explore the personal characteristics and traits that you will need to develop in order to be an effective board member – delving into the critical differences between the role of the senior manager and the role of the director.

Course Benefits

The workshop is delivered by experienced board directors who, drawing on their personal experiences, can offer a practical insight into life as a board member of both large and small organisations. It will also signpost areas where you can get further support and training to help you make the leap to the step to the board room and develop the confidence to be a highly effective board member.

Learning Objectives

By the time you have completed the session, you will be able to:

1. Assess, with a clear understanding of the role, whether you are ready and/or willing to meet the challenge of becoming a board director.
2. Identify the gaps in your knowledge and expertise, and understand how you need to develop in order to become a confident and effective director.

Strategic Decision Making - Morning course 2

Overview

Based on cutting-edge research into how senior teams make strategic decisions, this interactive workshop will equip you with an understanding of the ingredients of effective strategic decision making and provide insights into the main challenges. You will then focus on assessing your own organisation’s competence in strategic decision making and consider the areas you will need to focus on to strengthen this ability.

This workshop looks at all three of what Cliff Bowman called the ‘zones of debate’ and what these mean for directors. It looks at the role of ‘comfortable debate’ – and the limits to its value.

It looks at the notion of ‘uncomfortable debate’ – with guidance on how to facilitate this. It will also explore the impact of ‘assumptions’ that underpin debate about strategic decisions, and how these are promoted by organisational culture and human behaviour, as well as strategic deliberation.

Course Benefits

Assess your organisation's capability in making strategic decisions and understand what your organisation needs to do to strengthen its strategic decision making capability.

Learning Objectives

By the time you have completed the session, you will be able to:

1. Understand the ingredients of effective strategic decision making – and some of the key challenges.
2. Assess your own organisation’s strategic decision making capability and know where this can be strengthened.
Improving Board Dynamics - Afternoon course 1

Overview

This interactive taster session considers the important interplay and balance of board dynamics exhibited at board level, focusing on how to improve interaction, behaviour and relationships in board meetings. In this focused introduction to the topic, you will have the opportunity to explore:

What board dynamics are – and why they matter
Why (and how) board dynamics differ from those at executive and management level
Some of the typical features of a well-functioning board with good board dynamics
How to recognise and help develop positive dynamics

Course Benefits

By engaging with a practical case study, based around a realistic board meeting scenario, you will learn how to identify both positive and potentially damaging board dynamics.

As a group, you will also have the opportunity to reflect on and share your own experiences, assess your own approach to board meetings, and consider how you could refine your approach in order to achieve more productive personal and business outcomes.

Learning Objectives

By the time you have completed the session, you will be able to:

1. Distinguish board dynamics from the dynamics of other management teams
2. Recognise positive board meeting dynamics and employ an approach that supports positive dynamics in your own board

Practical Tips for Becoming a NED - Afternoon course 2

Overview

Choosing to become a non-executive director (NED) could be prompted by a lifestyle change or a desire to use skills and knowledge gained in an executive environment. This could be fuelled by an ambition to do something worthy in the third sector or to support enterprising organisations. Or it could be the result of wanting to become involved in an organisation without taking on an executive role.

Whatever the rationale, it is essential to know how to access such roles – and how to make yourself the most desirable candidate in a marketplace where multiple applicants may be attempting to secure a prime role. This workshop will also explore the risks and responsibilities of the NED role, with recommendations on best practice for assessing contracts in an increasingly litigious environment.

Course Benefits

Identify what skills you have and need to hone for NED positions and how to distinguish yourself from the competition. Tips and advice provided within this session will enable you to write a compelling CV and construct a well prepared list of questions before you proceed.

Learning Objectives

By the time you have completed the session, you will be able to:

1. Identify what skills you have and need to hone for NED positions and how to distinguish yourselves from others. Write a compelling CV and have a well prepared list of questions before you proceed.
2. Asses with greater knowledge the risks and responsibilities and as such be better placed to ensure you contract correctly.
