IoD Cumbria | Disruptive Innovation

22 May 2019
Kimi's Artisan Gelato, Staveley

Disruptive innovation is something we often hear about as an abstract concept.  How many of us really think about it as something that ‘we’ could bring about in our own industry?

Yet that is exactly the kind of effect that Stephensons Dairy, a Morecambe-based dairy wholesaler brought about when they became the first to market in the UK with Free Range Milk.
In the face of intensive farming methods and sub-breakeven pricing, Free Range Milk keeps cows grazing on grassland pasture for at least 180 days each year and puts more money per pint in farmers’ pockets.  This change in working dynamics means farmers are operating in the black not the red.  It also means cows are producing milk that is particularly good at micro-foaming for your morning cappuccino.  And after breakfast, you might want to move on to their Lancashire Cheese and artisan Gelato.

As a values-based organisation intent on improving conditions for cows, dairy farmers and even the nutritional quality of our food,  Stephensons have blazed a new trail in dairy that has not only captured the attention of people like Jamie Oliver, but also of industry giants such as Arla.  When the big operators are changing their advertising strategy as a result of your efforts, you know you’re on to something.
Stephensons have managed this disruption not through huge amounts of investment capital, but via collaboration across their supply chain.  From farmers to independent coffee merchants and artisan ice-cream and cheese makers, Stephensons have created a tight-knit community of interest around sustainability, product quality and welfare.
Join us on 22nd May to hear more and to taste for yourselves what IoD North West Director of the Year Innovation Award finalists Stephensons Dairy have achieved.
