IoD East Midlands - Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace - Expo East

Mental health issues can have a serious impact on business. When the IoD produced its mental health report in 2017, entitled ‘A Little More Conversation’, it became rapidly apparent that this is an issue that affects businesses on a large scale and one that needed further attention.  The Chairman of the IoD for Greater Lincolnshire will lead a panel of experts from the Local Enterprise Partnership, Local Authority, Third Sector and the IoD to explore a range of issues related to this increasingly important topic.

What is Expo East?

CityX have created the largest B2B Expo in the Greater Lincolnshire area with the Lincolnshire Business Expo which is a phenomenally popular event for businesses within Lincolnshire to showcase themselves, predominantly to other businesses within the County.

One of the opportunities missed was that business doesn’t just happen within Lincolnshire and being able to exhibit to new customers across geographic borders is absolutely essential.

Hence Expo East was born, the only business expo to bring together the bordering counties of Lincolnshire, encouraging business across borders with our neighbours, an estimated 5 million people. The event will be held on Thursday, 16 May 2019.

Gary Headland, IoD Greater Lincolnshire Chairman 

Gary Headland was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Lincoln College Group (LCG) on 4
th August 2014 and is responsible for the Lincoln, Newark and Gainsborough Colleges in the UK as well as international and commercial operations in the UK, the Kingdom Saudi Arabia, China, the Eastern Caribbean and Romania.

Prior to his current appointment, Gary was with Northgate Public Services for 3½ years as a Strategic Business Development Director and a Director at Norfolk Constabulary for over 2 years with responsibility for transformation, organisational performance and resource management.  Prior to joining Norfolk Constabulary, Gary was a senior Royal Air Force officer and his military career spanned 23 years in locations throughout the UK and overseas in Germany, Italy and the Middle East. 

Gary is an experienced Chairman of both private and education sector organisations and a highly experienced non-executive director. He is currently Chairman of the Greater Lincolnshire Branch of the Institute of Directors and Chairman of the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce.  Gary is also a Midlands Engine Export Champion for the Department of International Trade.  Gary became a Director of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership in January 2019.

Gary has underpinned his public and private sector career spanning nearly 33 years with high quality education and training: he holds an MA from Kings College London and an MBA from the Open University Business School.  He is a graduate of the Defence Academy’s Advanced Command and Staff Course, which is a one-year full-time postgraduate course aimed at preparing the top 25% of all Armed Forces Officers for high grade appointments by developing their command, analytical and communications skills.  Gary is a Member of the Institute of Directors and qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

Professor Derek Ward, Director of Public Health, Lincolnshire County Council 

Derek Ward is the Director of Public Health for Lincolnshire.  He took over the role in February 2018. Prior to this, Derek split his working time between an academic and senior NHS leadership role. Between 2015 and 2018, he led the newly established Health and Social Care Research Centre at the University of Derby as Head of Centre and Professor of Public Health for 3 days a week. During the other 2 days he provided professional public health advice and support into the 4 Clinical Commissioning Groups across Derbyshire.

Prior to taking up this joint role in 2015, Derek was the Director of Public Health for Derby City for 5 years.  Derek has significant experience of national and regional policy work, having been a Consultant in Public Health and a Senior Civil Servant in the Department of Health.

He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, a Fellow and a Board Trustee of the Royal Society for Public Health and is the East Midlands Clinical Public Health Research Lead for the National Institute for Health Research.

Dean Fathers, Health Board Director, Greater Lincolnshire LEP

Dean became Chair of Nottinghamshire Healthcare in January 2011. Alongside his duties in the NHS, Dean is also a Non-Executive Director with the Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman, a Board Member of the GLLEP and a Professor of Organisational Resilience at the University of Lincoln where he is Chair of the National Centre for Organisational Resilience.

Prior to becoming Chair of Nottinghamshire Healthcare, Dean chaired NHS Bassetlaw, was a Non-Executive Director of the South Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority and also chaired Doncaster Health Authority. Dean has additionally been Chair of United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Dean has a strong interest in leadership, executive development and governance. He has held roles on the NHS’s National Training Group, chaired the East Midlands SHA’s Learning and Development Board, was a Founder and Board Member of the East Midlands Leadership Academy, held roles on two Workforce Development Boards and is on the Midlands Regional Talent Board. He currently sits on the NHS’s Workforce Race Equality Standards (WRES) Advisory Group, the NHS’s Culture Advisory Group, has been involved with both the Accelerated Access Review and the National Strategy for Improvement and Leadership Development Advisory Group (Smith Review) and is a member of NHS Improvement’s Chairs’ Advisory Partnership Board, on the Board of NHS Providers and was formerly Vice Chair of the NHS Confederation’s Mental Health Network.

Charlie Blackwell, Counselor, NW Counselling Hub

Charlie is the youngest member of NW Counselling Hub’s team (NWCH) and started his Journey as a counsellor at 19 as a result of his own therapy and life experiences. Before joining the hub, Charlie’s experience was working with venerable adults who had been involved with drugs and alcohol. Since joining, he has been able to develop the skills to work with all ages and has found a passion for working with adolescents and young adults.

Born in the transition period to the “millennial generation” he grew up in an age without social media and smart phones but by the time he became a teenager the early stages of this had started to appear. As a result of this Charlie is on the cusp of understanding a life without it and also understanding the implications the technology boom has created in the younger community. Charlie personally believes there are a lot of negative side effects that have come with this advancement and that the younger generation have lost the ability to communicate effectively. Resulting in a tremendous amount of pressure on how we “should” look and act.

Charlie joined the hub in October 2017 initially as a volunteer counsellor and then was invited to join the management team as of February 2018. His role within the hub has been crucial for its day to day running as well as its continued growth.The hub has seen recent success due to Naomi Watkins receiving a grant through the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to become a Churchill fellow. She will be researching suicide prevention in Australia and New Zealand. During this time, Charlie will be made acting Director.

Kamile Stankute, Parliamentary Affairs Officer, IoD

Kamile joined the Institute of Directors in November 2016 as Parliamentary Affairs Officer after graduating from King’s College London with MA in Politics and Contemporary History.

Her role is managing day to day relations with MPs, government departments and assisting with policy developments and research. She is also involved in the IoD’s Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace campaign and has written a report on managing mental health in changing business environments.

Kamile has previous experience in public affairs, interning at agencies and in-house. Prior to joining the IoD, she spent 6 weeks at HM Treasury as a researcher, where she used unpublished Treasury documents to produce a report on the 1988 Budget.
