IoD members enjoy the benefits of having an influential organisation on their side in representing their concerns to government, and at their side in providing professional business support wherever it is needed.
IoD Jersey has around 650 members from all sectors of the business community, both private and public sectors.
The Branch encourages lifelong learning within our membership and we are proud to recognise that we currently have 12 Chartered Directors in the IoD Jersey Branch.
The local branch promotes the business sector and strives through lobbying to ensure that political decisions do not stifle local business and free enterprise.
The IoD Lunch club is a permanent feature on the IoD Jersey calendar. All the diaried lunches will be held at The Grand Hotel. For further information on the 2012 lunches sponsored by UBS AG, please download the pdf below.
First published in 1994 and last updated in 2008, the Guidelines provide a comprehensive summary of the duties and responsibilities of a director. Written by Bedell Group and updated by Advocates Anthony Dessain and James Campbell, the guidelines will be of assistance to all those involved with corporate activity whether as directors, company secretaries, investors, professional advisors, partners, sole proprietors or senior executives reporting to a board member. All changes made by the Companies (Amendment) (No.9) (Jersey) Law 2008 have been incorporated into the new guidelines and it is therefore recommended that both members and non-members purchase the updated publication to ensure best practice at all times.
Chartered Directors lead organisations in the private, public or third sectors, at the highest strategic level. As a Chartered Director you will demonstrate the expertise and integrity needed to meet the challenges of business today. If you are looking to enhance your skills and improve your organisation's performance, Chartered Director is the professional qualification you need.
Benefits to you and your organisation
Chartered Directors have a dramatic and positive effect on the success of their organisations and are able to:
· Demonstrate to shareholders, stakeholders, clients and customers that their organisation is professional and successful.
· Operate at a strategic and tactical level to establish and sustain growth.
· Appreciate all aspects of effective business leadership and sound corporate governance.
· Improve the board's effectiveness and their personal contribution.
· Enhance their career prospects as an executive director or non-executive director.
To register for Chartered Director you must:
· be a full Member or Fellow of the Institute
· have passed the Certificate and Diploma examinations in Company Direction
· have 3 full years' experience in a director level role for holders of a recognised degree or professional qualification or have 7 full years' experience in a director level role, for those who do not hold a recognised degree or professional qualification.
For either period you may have been working in a number of roles at director (or equivalent) level, including non-executive positions (NED positions must be consecutive). Your board (or governing body) must comprise three directors (including executive or non-executive directors).
The maximum time for applying for Chartered Director, having passed the Diploma in Company Direction is ten years.

For a number of years the branch has annually organised Director shadowing where lower VI students attending local schools and colleges are offered the opportunity to shadow directors working in both the public and private sector. Importantly it provides a means for over 70 of these students to experience a week shadowing a senior director in order to get a taste for a business career.
This is not just about shadowing a director though. In order to get a place on this scheme the students have to produce a detailed CV and then undertake a short but formal interview with a panel of professional business leaders. We provide feedback to the students on both of these aspects in order to prepare them for the real world. Furthermore the students are expected to produce a report detailing their experience.
The two Shadows that score the highest combined marks for their CV, interview and report win a prize that includes an all paid invitation to attend the IoD Annual Convention at the Albert Hall.
The scheme is run in conjunction with Jersey Careers and our business Sponsor this year, KPMG. A booklet describing the scheme can be downloaded here and the Student Application Form is available here.
This is not just a learning experience for the Students and is truly a two way experience. This is also a fantastic experience for any Director wishing to learn from and be challenged by tomorrow’s leaders! Any director who is interested to learn more about the scheme is asked to contact Maureen Bourniquel.
As a member you are automatically assigned a branch and encouraged to give your views on local issues and take advantage of networking opportunities in your area. All members are welcome to attend events at any branch.
