IoD NI Chair Update - June 2026
As Chair of the Institute of Directors Northern Ireland, I am pleased to reflect on our year to date, one that has continued to challenge, reshape and ultimately strengthen leadership across our business community.
The operating environment throughout 2026 has remained complex. Persistent cost pressures, evolving regulatory frameworks, and ongoing global uncertainty have required directors to make difficult decisions with agility and resilience. At the same time, Northern Ireland continues to offer significant opportunities for growth, innovation, and international trade.
In this context, the role of strong, informed leadership has never been more important.
We have continued to engage constructively with policymakers and stakeholders at both local and national levels, advocating for an environment that supports sustainable growth, innovation and investment. We have also worked collaboratively with business organisations to articulate concerns around the proposed Good Jobs Bill, particularly its scale, scrutiny and potential impact on Northern Ireland’s competitiveness.
In response to recent unrest, we joined with other leading business organisations in condemning violence and reaffirming our shared commitment to a safe, inclusive and welcoming Northern Ireland. We recognise the vital contribution of people from all backgrounds to our economy and society. Such moments underline the importance of stability, responsible leadership and the role of business in fostering economic opportunity, confidence and cohesion.
Supporting Our Members
This year, we have continued to grow and diversify our membership, welcoming leaders from across a wide range of sectors, from established corporates to scaling SMEs and innovative start-ups. Engagement remains strong, with members actively participating in our events, professional development programmes and forums.
Our events programme continues to be a highlight. We have recently launched our IoD NI & Bank of Ireland Annual Dinner, taking place on 10 September, where we are delighted to welcome Dr Norah Patten, aeronautical engineer and Ireland’s first astronaut, as keynote speaker. This flagship event brings members and stakeholders together to celebrate leadership and strengthen connections across the business community.
Alongside this, we have delivered a programme of high-quality, sector-focused events that create space for meaningful dialogue on the issues that matter most. Our Talk and Tour series has included a recent visit to Encirc in Derrylin, offering valuable insight into one of Northern Ireland’s leading manufacturing operations.
We have also strengthened our offering for Finance Directors and HR Directors and will soon launch a forum for General Counsel to further support peer connection and collaboration.
We continue to deliver a successful professional development pathway for directors with demand for governance training and leadership development remaining high.
So far this year, we have delivered both the IoD NI Accelerated Certificate in Company Direction and the Diploma in Company Direction, with NI members also attending the Global Certificate in collaboration with the University of St Andrews.
Looking ahead, our module-based Certificate in Company Direction will run from September to November (spaces still available!) alongside an enhanced online provision ensuring our programmes remain accessible, flexible, and fit for the evolving needs of modern directors.
Looking Ahead
The pace of change shows no sign of slowing. Technological advancement – particularly AI alongside ESG and shifting workforce dynamics, will continue to reshape the business landscape in Northern Ireland.
Against this backdrop, our priorities are clear:
-
To grow and engage a diverse and dynamic membership
-
To enhance our professional development and accreditation offering
-
To strengthen our position as a trusted voice for directors
-
To ensure IoD NI remains relevant, accessible and valued
Closing Reflections
Northern Ireland’s business community has demonstrated resilience and adaptability in recent years. While challenges remain, there is strong cause for optimism.
IoD Northern Ireland will continue to support our members with the insight, advocacy and connections needed to navigate what lies ahead.
I would like to thank all our members for their continued engagement and commitment to leadership excellence. A special thank you as well to our committee members for the dedication they’ve shown so far this year in representing the IoD, attending events and policy roundtables on our behalf, and bringing our values to life through their actions.
John Hansen
Chair, IoD Northern Ireland
