Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?
Since approximately 2007
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?
I left the security of very well paid “employment” aged 23 to set up my own insurance brokerage with my now late husband. After building the client bank through meeting people and networking then being bought out, I then worked with the new owner as an Associate Director. Also became involved (owner) in another business I knew nothing about, learned the trade so I could build it up make it attractive and sold it. Then returned to insurance broking in my own right again and then partnered with a very well loved and very successful Ipswich insurance broker whom I happened to meet at an Institute of Directors Christmas drinks event in Ipswich. I have always believed by attending the right business events and “giving back” there will always be opportunity for everyone!
Q: What do you hope to achieve as an IoD Branch Ambassador?
I am so flattered to be invited! I will love to promote how people can benefit from the IoD and its always worthwhile and informative events.
Q: If you could give your 21 year old self some advice what would it be?
Always get Agreements on paper in black and white. Don’t be a “busy fool”. Always, always, Be Kind but don’t spent too much time with those who are very pessimistic about your new venture and who drain you. Aim high every time in whatever you do and you will do well if you land half way up. Learn Time Management skills. With sales, always identify the decision maker first. Never under estimate the power of the word “Thank You” and always praise others when praise is due.
Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
I have shot clay targets (clay pigeon shooting) for many years, used to enjoy sailing, now motor boating on a sea fishing boat. My home, my partner and his lovely family.
Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?
No, I always look forward to my next working day.
Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?
There are so many reasons why, too many to mention here – making time to view the IoD web will be time very well spent. And, currently the one off joining fee has been waived, Full Membership costs only £8 per week, Associate Membership just £3.80 per week – I spend more on take away coffee to put it in perspective.
