IoD Hertfordshire finds out what's inside the Houses of Parliament?
IoD Hertfordshire Guided Tour Around the Houses of Parliament with Sir Mike Penning MP for Hemel Hempstead.
On Thursday 25th April 2019 IoD Hertfordshire was given the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament for a guided tour by Sir Mike Penning MP for Hemel Hempstead. Sir Mike has worked at Westminster in different capacities for over 20 years and has been the MP for Hemel Hempstead since 2005.
We were shown areas of Parliament that normal tour guides aren’t allowed to see, such as the breathtaking St Mary Undercroft Chapel which dates back to the middle ages and was apparently hidden from Henry VIII and disguised as a stable. in 1911 Suffragette Emily Davison also hid overnight in a broom cupboard just outside the chapel in protest on women’s right to vote.
The fascinating tour continued with Wesminster Hall (the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster) the House of Lords, The Robing Room (which the Queen uses for the State opening of Parliament) and its hidden toilet! Central Lobby, the House of Commons & lastly the terrace with breathtaking views of the Thames.
Here is just some of the feedback I have received:
“Thank you for the invite and for organising tonight’s tour. I found it incredibly interesting and it was a privilege to have such a knowledgeable and passionate guide in Sir Mike. Please pass on my thanks to him”.
“Thank you for your brilliant arranging what was a wonderful tour of the Houses of Parliament. It was absolutely fascinating and a real honour to have had the opportunity”.
