We talk to the IoD North West chair, also founder and CEO of MC2, Mike Perls, about the leaders he represents and the region’s plans for the next year
Why are you proud to represent the IoD?
Business leaders change society. They make things happen and improve lives. The IoD exists to inspire and support these leaders and I’m proud to chair an organisation with such a powerful and significant purpose.
What’s the IoD’s role in your region?
Our role is to inspire leaders and support business by helping to develop directors. We create incredible peer networks, extraordinary content and aspirational development programmes.
Describe your members
We have nearly 2000 members across all the key sectors in the region and our focus continues to be on the key growth sectors in the region – advanced materials & manufacturing, life sciences, biotech, agri-science and technology especially fintech and energy.
Tell me a little about your region
The North West has a history of innovation – from the evolution of the industrial revolution to the world’s first programmable computer to the commercialisation of graphene. It’s the original modern environment comfortable playing on the world stage. Collaboration is built into our DNA because of its incremental benefit and we’re currently seeing growth in digital health clusters and financial/technology clusters due to the unique ability to clash sectors together.
What does your region offer business leaders?
Our region offers relevance: we offer insight into global and regional strategies to allow leaders to align their strategies accordingly. It’s economic clusters drive our communities, events and networks not geography.
Tell me about something your region has done in the past year that you are particularly proud of?
We have been significant in representing our members’ voice within the Powerhouse initiative. The clarity of our strategy has brought the National Science Conference to Alderley Park and has encouraged the establishment of a Northern Powerhouse analyst within the national policy unit.
What are you most looking forward to, as IoD regional chair, in the next 12 months?
We will be the catalyst to the creation of Cluster Group Powerhouse trade missions that will drive collaboration, jobs and productivity within our growth sectors and will take the North of England onto the world stage.
What’s your personal business ethos?
Make a difference.
