Introducing our new Essex Branch Ambassador Biplab Rakshi

IoD Essex Branch Ambassador Introduction.

Your name: Biplab Rakshi

Your title/role and company name: Managing Director

Your IoD branch: IoD Essex

Your IoD Branch Ambassador role: Infrastructure Ambassador

Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?

More than 10 years.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?

I have been in the corporate energy sector for over 30 years, starting at Shell International then Mobil Oil before embarking on an MBA at Cranfield Business School which led to senior positions at Eastern Electricity and being part of the team that set up the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). Post the NDA founded Atomic Acquisitions with former colleagues, focusing on low carbon energy.

Q: What do you hope to achieve as an IoD Branch Ambassador?

Improve the prominence of IOD Essex and working with regional members identify channels that secure opportunities in infrastructure for members. Assist and facilitate member needs.

Q: If you could give your 21 year-old self some advice what would it be?

There is a big skills shortage in infrastructure development. Essex has some of the biggest infrastructure projects in the UK: two nuclear power stations, Thames Crossing being a few. These are long term projects that need highly skilled personnel where salaries are above the norm.

Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?

Trustee of an Essex Charity promoting culture, social, mental and physical wellbeing amongst young adults.

Guest lecturer at Queen Mary on Energy policy.

Married with a son who keeps me busy.

Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?

With so many infrastructure opportunities in the region how can Essex based companies benefited from inward government investment. How can Essex IOD help in promoting regional the skill base in support of these opportunities.

Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?

Members can benefit from extensive IOD network to identify mentors and facilitate discussions amongst peers in similar situations. Resources especially amongst small SME’s can often be a barrier to growth but with the IOD reach back much of this can be overcome through expert impartial advice.
