IoD £10 challenge at Nottingham Trent University
Nottingham Trent University has participated for the 3rd consecutive year in the IoD’s £10 Challenge.
Split into a total of 49 teams, ranging in size from 2 – 5, students from the university were given two weeks to turn £10 into as much profit as possible. The challenge aims to improve students teamwork, time management, fundraising, creative and entrepreneurial skills.
Each of the participating teams begins the challenge by being given a mentor; an influential business leader from the local area who will oversee and give advice to the students on how best to approach the challenge.
The students, along with their mentors, came up with some fantastic fundraising and money making ideas. These included:
- ‘Bake off’ inspired events
- Sponsored head shaving
- Leg waxing
- Raffles
- Pub Quizzes
- Climbing Mount Snowden in fancy dress
The list goes on…
100% of the profit each team makes goes towards the John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre, a purpose built research centre based on Nottingham Trent’s Clifton campus that aims to save lives by improving the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers.
As a result of the brilliant fundraising ideas, the total this year’s teams have raised is an incredible £13,090.12! The team that won the ‘most money raised’ part of the challenge was team ‘Titan’ with £1,453… who knew students could be so resourceful!? Well actually we knew our IoD Student Members could be, and it is as a result of these students that this challenge continues to be so successful and produce such amazing results.
Georgina Phillips from the Nottingham Trent University employability team, who played a huge role in organising and coordinating the entire challenge, had this to say:
“IoD Student Membership offers our NTU students the platform to network and build up their own contacts for future career opportunities. The £10 Challenge has now been running for 3 years and has raised over £30,000 for John Van Geest Cancer Charity. Students are able to develop key employability skills through fun and entrepreneurial ideas to enhance their CVs and LinkedIn profiles. I am delighted with how successful this programme is, creating a real collaboration between the University, IoD and John Van Geest, which brings students and employers together at a critical time in their career path.”
Prizes were also given to the teams that had the best press coverage throughout the competition and to the team with the best reflection piece, which was judged by IoD Student Membership staff.
We at the IoD would like to say a huge thank you to all of the students involved, to Nottingham Trent University for championing the challenge, the IoD East Midlands regional branch for their help in organising it and to all of the mentors who did such a fantastic job of guiding their teams through the two weeks.
