IoD Essex and Entrpreneurs for the Future

The Essex branch of the Institute of Directors (IoD) has held its annual Aspirations in Business event to inspire, raise the aspirations and encourage 16 to 19 year olds to consider entrepreneurship as a career option.

This year’s event, held at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford, drew students from schools and colleges including Southend High for Boys, Hylands School and The King Edmund School.

The event was funded by Make Happen, park of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme, a group of educational providers and interested parties with the common aim of widening participation and helping young people.

The day was chaired by Christine Bhatt, Chair of IoD Essex and CEO of Systematics International. The day included contributions from a number of guest speakers, including Jordan Holder the Co-Founder & Director of Chatham Chaps, Sam Rope the Group HR Director for Seetec and Baiju Solanki, CEO & Founder of EnSpirit Global.

The students also took part in an enterprise activity; organising the School Prom whilst raising funds for the school’s chosen charity and were assisted by table hosts including Sarah Morton the South Essex Regional Manager for Career Ready, Ian West the Managing Director at One Marketing Ltd & IoD Ambassador and Paul Durrant, Consultant at PDT Sales Consultancy & IoD Ambassador.

Lois Sharp, Head of Business Studies at Hylands School said ‘the students and I had an enjoyable day and feedback from the students was very positive’.

David Mills from Southend High School for Boys said ‘Myself and the students really enjoyed it. The location and food were great. The speakers were interesting and the students like to hear real people talk about business and how this affects them, so they were very relevant. The task was good they said they enjoyed presenting’.

Jordan Holder said ‘The event structure worked really well and all the students were so engaged in the activities and acted like real pro’s’.
