What you need to know to be an effective director
The IoD Certificate in Company Direction will equip you with the knowledge you need to function as an effective company director and leader. Covering governance, finance, strategy and leadership, the certificate is a Bachelors level (SCQF) qualification in its own right and the first stage in the Chartered Director Programme.
Objectives
Our Certificate in Company Direction is designed to improve your performance by sharing the latest insights in high-performance leadership. Divided into four modules, it covers:
- the role, responsibilities and legal duties of a business director
- the characteristics of an effective board
- financial terms and concepts
- issues and processes involved in formulating strategic business plans
- how leaders create influence and impact within and beyond their organisation

The board’s role in corporate governance and your legal responsibilities as a director.
Leadership for Directors
The latest techniques for influencing, engaging and creating impact.
Strategy for Directors
The skills you need to create, lead and evaluate your organisation’s strategic processes.
Finance for Non-Finance Directors
The skills you need to understand organisational finance and the relationship between financial and operational strategies.

If you purchase all certificate modules upfront, you will receive a discounted package rate. Please note this cannot be done online. Please email [email protected] for a booking form. Examination fees for the first sit of each module are included, any transfers or re-sit fees are at an additional fee. You can also book and pay for modules individually on relevant course pages.

Introduction to IoD’s Certificate in Company Direction Programme
Sample and experience an element of course content alongside other delegates and IoD’s course leader. Get a feel for how IoD’s director training is delivered. On Wednesday 4 September at 9am, online.
Accelerated Certificate in Company Direction
You can fast-track your director development with our five-day residential course. Practical learning enhanced by real-life scenarios and peer collaboration will give you knowledge and skills that you can use immediately at board level for maximum impact. As well as offering time-poor directors a faster way to upskill, the accelerated certificate is also a great solution for leadership teams wanting to develop a shared approach to governance, strategy and leadership.
