IoD appoints Kitty Ussher as new Chief Economist

The Institute of Directors has announced that Kitty Ussher has been appointed as the new Chief Economist at the Institute.

Kitty Ussher is a UK macroeconomist and public policy research professional, most recently Chief Economic Advisor at the cross-party think-tank Demos.

A former MP for Burnley, her government experience includes serving as Economic Secretary to the Treasury during the early phase of the financial crisis (2007-08) and also as a junior minister at the Department for Work and Pensions (2008-09). Previously she was a special adviser at the Department for Trade and Industry, and a local government councillor in Lambeth.

Since stepping back from active politics in 2010, she has devised and delivered public policy thought leadership research projects both through Demos and her own company Tooley Street Research.

Speaking about her appointment, Kitty Ussher said:

“I am delighted to be joining the IoD during such an important time for business.

“I have long been aware of the value of the Institute, going back to my time in Government. It encourages entrepreneurial activity and promotes responsible business practice, to the benefit of all businesses and the wider economy.

“As we emerge from the pandemic, the IoD has an important role to play in ensuring the everyday experiences of UK businesses are heard and understood by government, while firms themselves welcome up-to-date analysis on the rapidly changing economic and policy landscape.  I am looking forward to working with the team and members to ensure this important dialogue is maintained and enhanced.”

Dr Roger Barker, Director of Policy and Corporate Governance, said:

“I am excited to welcome Kitty to the IoD. She has a wealth of experience from her time in Government and the wider public policy arena that will be immensely valuable to our members and business as a whole.”

Ussher joins the Institute of Directors on Friday 3rd September 2021.
