IoD press release India trade deal will remove barriers and costs for UK companies

Responding to the news that the UK has signed a Free Trade Agreement with India, Emma Rowland, Policy Advisor for Trade at the Institute of Directors, said:

“The UK-India trade agreement is a win for the UK, removing barriers and business costs for British firms trading with the fourth largest global economy.

“The deal secures a reduction in tariffs for many key UK sectors, notably whisky, automotives, aerospace and many more, which will open new opportunities and easier access for exporters looking for growth. With significant growth prospects on the horizon and a rising consumer base, India is an attractive place for UK companies to do business.

“The global trading environment is currently an unstable one, with greater fragmentation and increased levels of protectionism. In light of recent trade wars and US tariff related disruption, new partnerships that encourage free and open trade should be celebrated.

“The IoD stands ready to support its members in accessing this important market. We urge the government to do all it can to ensure UK businesses have access to the guidance and advice that they need to be able to make the most of the opportunities this deal offers.”
