IoD names Paul Mulvaney as Chartered Director of the Year

The Institute of Directors (IoD) has named Paul Mulvaney as its Chartered Director of the Year.

Paul is executive director of ESB Networks, the electrical distribution system operator in Ireland, which is leading the transition to a low carbon future, particularly in the electrification of heat and transport.

The Chartered Director (CDir) programme, run by the IoD, is recognised globally as the leading qualification for directors. The Chartered Director of the Year award recognises an outstanding business leader who scored the highest total across the certificate, diploma and final interview of this year’s qualifying directors.

In his previous role as executive director of innovation for ESB Group, Paul set up an innovation hub to foster clean tech development and was on the investment committee of Novus Modus, a clean tech venture capital fund.

He was the founding managing director of ESB eCars, which set up the EV charging infrastructure in Ireland, and also set up a smart energy services business to help companies reduce their carbon footprint.

Paul received his award at the IoD Chartered Director’s Virtual Summit, where expert speakers explored how directors are dealing with leadership and governance within a fast-moving economic, social and political landscape.

Emma Hicks, head of professional development, IoD, said: “Our congratulations to Paul on this fantastic achievement. Chartered Directors are industry leaders in the practice of corporate governance and their passion for continuous improvement is one that the IoD holds in the highest regard.

“At a time like this, our Chartered Director community has never been so pivotal and we are committed to championing their success.”

The IoD is the UK’s number one organisation for directors, providing support, events, professional development and a lobbying voice for all types of business.
