Chartered Director eligibility criteria updated
At the Institute of Directors, we have recently announced changes to the eligibility criteria for Chartered Director status. Chartered Director is the IoD’s flagship professional designation – recognising excellence in governance, professionalism and board-level leadership.
The updates are designed to make the pathway to Chartered Director status clearer, more accessible and better aligned with modern governance practices, while maintaining the high standards associated with the qualification.
Key changes include:
- The removal of the £250,000 annual turnover requirement.
- Clearer eligibility guidance, including expectations around recent and consecutive governance experience.
- Broader recognition for senior leadership positions that carry significant governance responsibilities.
- Recognition of experience gained through working closely with boards.
The revised criteria will continue to align with the IoD Director Competency Framework and Chartered Director assessment standards, in order to ensure a consistent and rigorous process.
These changes are intended to provide greater clarity for prospective applicants and open up the pathway to a wider range of experienced leaders whose roles involve substantial governance and board-level responsibilities.
