Action is needed now to modernise our infrastructure and create the conditions for long term prosperity

The Institute of Directors Northern Ireland (IoD NI) has today launched our report “Getting Infrastructure and Investment Back on Track” alongside our partners Gravis Planning, Danske Bank, SONI and KPMG.

We have set out a focused programme of reforms designed to unlock economic potential, accelerate sustainable development and strengthen Northern Ireland’s long‑term competitiveness.

The Action Plan responds directly to the challenges consistently raised by many NI business leaders: slow and inconsistent planning decisions, uncertainty around major infrastructure priorities and a lack of stable, long‑term investment signals. To address these challenges, the plan highlights three key priority recommendations;

  1. Establishing an independent Infrastructure Commission for Northern Ireland.
  2. Appointing a dedicated Planning Champion
  3. Commission an Independent Expert review of alternative arrangements into funding water infrastructure

With renewed political stability, a growing all‑island energy market and increasing global competition, Northern Ireland must act now to modernise its infrastructure and create the conditions for long‑term prosperity.

John Hansen, Chair, IoD Northern Ireland said:

“Our members are clear: Northern Ireland needs a clear and informed long‑term strategy, a modernised planning system and a credible approach to environmental and infrastructure investment. This Action Plan provides a practical, business‑led blueprint for change. With forward thinking leadership, speed and commitment, Northern Ireland can unlock the investment and innovation needed to secure a more prosperous future.”

Mike Brown CBE MVO, Chair, HS2 Ltd said:

“Delivering major infrastructure requires long-term thinking, political courage and clear governance. The proposals set out in this Action Plan reflect the kind of strategic, independent approach that gives investors confidence and helps turn ambition into delivery. With the right structures in place, Northern Ireland can drive transformational growth and strengthen its position as a competitive, attractive destination for investment and business.”
