Exploring Non-Executive Director Pathways IoD Manchester, NOVA and Robert Half
Manchester IoD was delighted last month to host its first joint event with NOVA at our Manchester hub in Clockwise – an evening dedicated to supporting senior leaders looking to take their first steps towards a Non-Executive Director (NED) role.
NOVA, a network of like-minded professionals, is expanding its presence in the North West under the leadership of Charleigh Burroughs and founder Billie O’Connor. The NOVA community is focused on providing a confidential, relaxed, and supportive space for women in senior leadership positions in collaboration with trusted partners such as Robert Half who help make the work they do possible.
Event attendees joined us from across the UK, including Leeds, London, and the North West – to hear powerful and honest insights from two inspiring NEDs: Paul Savage and Dianne Walker. With the expert moderation of Catherine Henry, Branch Director at Robert Half Manchester, Paul and Dianne shared their NED journeys and unique perspectives on the role, offering valuable advice to those just starting out.
Key takeaways included:
- There is plenty of support available — but preparing for the role and being properly qualified is vital.
- Understanding the legal duties and risks involved is essential, particularly the independent NED’s role as a governance safeguard.
- It can take 200–300 applications to secure a first NED role — persistence and preparation matter.
- The NED network is small — doing a great job in-role is crucial.
- Use your own network – reconnect with former colleagues who may now be in a NED role or know of such opportunities.
- The NED role has evolved and will continue to change – adaptability and strategic thinking are key.
Manchester IoD Chair, Debbie Black, closed the session with a reminder that the Post Office scandal has put the role of the NED under scrutiny, flagging the IoD response of establishing a Commission specifically to review the NED role. The focus of the Commission is ensuring the proper deployment of NEDs to foster a culture of responsible risk taking and effective board governance.
This is just the beginning of a promising collaboration between Manchester IoD, NOVA and Robert Half, and we look forward to supporting more members on their NED journeys with key information sessions.
