Tell us about your role at Lloyds Bank International.

I am the Head of Isle of Man Commercial Banking. The Commercial team support the banking needs of businesses ranging from small sole traders and charities to large Corporates and Financial Institutions.

Why did you choose the IoD Chartered Director programme?

The IoD qualifications are widely recognised and respected in the business community.

I reached a point in my banking career when I wanted to develop from a Senior Manager into a leadership role and the IoD programme supports this by covering topics such as leadership, governance and strategy which is fundamental to taking the next step in my career.

If you could highlight one aspect of the course which ‘stood-out’ what would that be?

The highlight for me was working together with people from across many industries globally. Sharing knowledge and listening to other people’s experiences was as valuable as the actual course material. It was also a real confidence boost to have other leaders listen and appreciate my own experience and input.

The continuous learning aspect makes IoD very attractive too with such a wide variety of courses and events I feel that I can keep up to date with the latest developments in governance which is key in my new role.

Has the course helped you with your career progression?

I believe it has – not only has the course demonstrated that I can acquire new knowledge and skills, but that I also can apply these to my role.   My confidence and self-belief have increased too, and this has given me a platform from which to step up to a more senior role.

What benefits has undertaking IoD qualifications given you in respect of your leadership qualities?

Networking with other business leaders and talking through shared experiences has been so valuable.  There is a huge variety of training and development within the bank, however the IoD qualification enhances what we already have and demonstrates to others that you’ve achieved a level of expertise and gives credibility. I think this has also helped me improve my understanding of our customer’s businesses, as well as the local business community and economy.

And finally, were there times you felt outside of your comfort zone?

Yes definitely – but through the IoD network and my peers at Lloyds I had all the support I needed to succeed.

If you are interested in developing your career and leadership skills, then why not consider one of our forthcoming courses.

All local courses are held at St John’s Mill, and sessions are also available online or at UK hubs.
