Student challenge raises money for cancer research

Students and staff at Nottingham Trent University celebrate their success in a previous year’s IoD East Midlands Enterprise Challenge!

Students at Nottingham Trent University have raised more than £7,000 for cancer research by taking part in the Institute of Directors (IoD) Enterprise Challenge.

The challenge is set every year by IoD East Midlands and involves IoD student members devising money-making ideas using an initial investment of £10 to £50.

The challenge aims to improve students’ teamwork, time management, fundraising, creative and entrepreneurial skills. It is now part of the second year employment and enterprise module at Nottingham Business School, part of the university.

Over 10 weeks, 170 students – supported by IoD volunteer mentors – raised £7,205 for the John van Geest (JvG) Cancer Research Centre in Nottingham.

Enterprises included virtual pubs, customised face masks, keyring hand gels, biodegradable glitter and boxes of edible s’more treat kits.

Cari Grice, branch manager for IoD East Midlands, said: “Congratulations to all who took part in this year’s challenge. The students had to be at their enterprising best given they were operating within the Covid-19 restrictions which meant a lot of their work was done virtually. We hope they found the challenge a valuable addition to their university studies.”

The JvG research centre is based at Nottingham Trent’s Clifton campus and aims to speed recovery and save lives by improving the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

IoD Student Membership provides a range of benefits to support students in their studies and careers.
