A Day in the Life - Neil Laughton

26 Jul 2018

A DAY IN THE LIFE
Neil Laughton, founder of Laughton & Co

Neil Laughton, 54, runs a training and development business. He lives in a house which he designed and built himself, in South Downs National Park, with his wife Caroline and three children under the age of 12.

What time does your alarm go off?

Usually at 6.30am but I am usually awake before this as one of the children will have stirred beforehand! I will get the kettle on and lay the breakfast table. If I’m not doing the school run, then I would probably do a workout before starting my workday.

What are you responsible for?
In the past, I’ve been responsible for soldiers or employees but nowadays, I am responsible for myself, my family, work associates, and my clients. In addition to running a training and development business, I am Chairman of a charity called the Scientific Exploration Society and Secretary of the Penny Farthing Club.

How did you become an entrepreneur?

After selling my construction company to a FTSE 100 company in 2011, I decided I would become a business coach, team trainer and inspirational speaker. I created my Laughton & Co brand and got trading!

Describe your typical day

My days are either intense filled with travel, meetings, presentations or group training, or chilled catching up with admin at home. When the weather gets to hot, I’ll head to the swimming pool alone or with the children once they have returned home from school.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given?

I would say to “never give up.’' I also heard something on the radio this morning, which was to: “Fix the engine while it’s still working.”

What are the best things about your job?

I would say the variety; helping individuals, teams, and business to thrive and the occasional exciting challenge disguised as a team-building event!

Where do you go for personal &/or professional advice?

I have a good network of professional advisors, coaches, and mentors I can turn to when needed.

How do you unwind after work?

By messing about with my children in the garden, games room or swimming pool.

How do you stay productive throughout the day?

I stay productive by being focused, self-motivated, organised with good delegation and the diary management skills.

What do you attend/read/watch to get ideas and inspiration?

I love reading inspirational stories, and explorer biographies. Not to mention watching adventure films.

What would have been your alternative career?

I once told the panel at an Admiralty Interview Board (to become an officer in the Royal Marines) that I would become a stuntman if they did not take me. Nothing has changed in 35 years!
