The Employment Rights Bill what do employers need to know?
The government has published its much anticipated Employment Rights Bill, representing a key step in the biggest shake up to employment rights in a generation.

The Bill contains 28 different policies, including:
- The removal of qualifying periods for key employment rights, including protection against unfair dismissal and paternity leave
- A ban on ‘exploitative’ zero hours contracts
- Steps to make flexible working the default
- A ‘ban’ on fire and rehire
- Widened eligibility for Statutory Sick Pay
- Changes designed to make it easier for trade unions to gain access to workplaces, secure statutory recognition, and take industrial action.

Jim Wright CDir is a specialist employment lawyer and partner at Knights, the largest commercial law firm outside of London. Jim was the first solicitor in private practice to qualify as a Chartered Director and his business received the Queens Award for excellence in International Trade in 2020. Currently Vice President of the Interlegal network, Jim is also a member of the Employment Lawyer’s Association and a fellow of the IoD. Jim was consulted to draft the codes of practice on discrimination in employment and separately, equal pay by the 2010 Conservative government.
