Join Ian Dormer CBE CDir, managing director, Rosh Engineering, as he uses his own experiences to guide fellow Chartered Directors when it comes to finding and gaining non-executive director roles, as well as offering tips on how to build and grow a portfolio career.

Ian will run the small audience of Chartered Directors through the hows and whys of becoming a non-executive director, the key differences between an executive director and a non-executive director position, and the relationship between businesses, boards and NEDs, and how to make the most out of them.

A recent poll of Chartered Director events attendees revealed that 47% of those surveyed wanted to learn more about non-executive director roles, and a further 42% were interested in hearing more about director and non-executive director recruitment.

For more than 25 years he has been Managing Director of Birtley, County Durham based specialist high voltage engineering contractor Rosh Engineering Ltd. After joining the IoD to learn the important aspects of running a business, for professional development and to share best practice, he became more involved regionally and nationally and was appointed national Chairman in 2012 for a 3 year term. Ian has always been passionate about promoting the development of a positive business climate. This has resulted in past appointments to the Board of Regional Development Agency, ONE North East, through to Chairing Business Link Tyne & Wear among others. He also has a passion for life-long learning and qualified as a Chartered Director in 2013. He is now Chairman of Newcastle College. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in Her Majesty the Queen’s 2016 New Year Honours list.
