IoD North West: The rise and fall and rise again of Gerald Ratner

Nearly 30 Years ago, Gerald Ratner gave a speech at the Institute of Directors Annual Conference talking about the growth of Ratners Group, despite the recent recession, at the Royal Albert Hall. Ratners within 8 years had gone from a loss of £350k to £120m profit.

Gerald Ratner 

After that conference, Gerald gave a searingly “honest” but intended to be tongue in cheek summary of the jewellery group that included Ratners, H Samuel, Ernest Jones, Zales and Watches of Switzerland. He had grown the retailer from 130 to 2500 stores

At that time, Ratners Group took more money than any retailer per square foot than any retailer in Europe because as Gerald put it “we give customers what they want”.

Gerald had truly revolutionised the jewellery industry and retail. The speech was remembered for 2 quotes in particular but the wealth of business lessons within that speech had been overshadowed. Many of lessons are still in use by businesses across the globe today.

In the weeks and months that followed the speech, shares in Ratner group fell £500m after huge media coverage focused on his description of one particular product as “total crap”.  Gerald ended up being forced out of the business.

Lots of this information is widely known, but what many don’t know what happened since.

What lessons have been learnt, how did he manage at the time and how did he rise again?

Gerald will take us on a journey that will show how he rose again and has reinvented himself and his business interests since including the publishing of 2 books with the later released on 10th November 2020
