The UK and EU are currently locked in a battle over whether and how to move on to the next phase of Brexit negotiations, which would see discussions move on from pure withdrawal issues relating to areas like citizens rights and money to talks about the future. These will encompass issues like trade and customs arrangements as well as what system would replace the free movement of people that currently exists between Britain and Europe.
The risk of no-deal still remains a real possibility, particularly if the UK and EU fail to agree to move on to these crucial phase two issues at an all-important EU summit in mid-December. But even if both sides manage to avert this scenario, huge questions remain about what a new free trade arrangement would mean for companies trading both domestically and cross-border.
Would access to EU research and science funding opportunities still remain, the enforceability of cross-border contracts and how much longer it might take for goods to cross the Channel are just some of the issues that arise no matter how the UK leaves the EU. At this session you will hear an update on negotiations as well as advice on how businesses should start preparing for all eventualities.
Allie Renison, IoD's Head of Europe and Trade Policy, will provide an update on negotiations.
Allie is closely engaged with all parts of Government in mapping out Brexit priorities on behalf of IoD Members, and is uniquely placed to shed what light is available at this stage on how talks are going as well as what the IoD is doing to influence and plan for the UK's exit from the EU.
