Barry Cushway
Barry provides advice on all aspects of personnel practice, including personnel policies and procedures, recruitment, employment conditions, job descriptions and evaluation, reward, performance management, disciplinary and grievance matters, employment tribunals, redundancies, severance packages and organisation review.
Barry has over 20 years’ experience as a Human Resources Career Development Consultant and over 30 years’ experience in all aspects of Human Resource Management, including training and development, recruitment and selection and employee relations.
His consultancy experience includes periods with PWC and Hay and he has been running his own consultancy, BCHR Ltd, since 1994. He has worked for over 100 public and private sector organisations on a range of projects including organisation reviews, introduction of reward systems, performance management and reviews of personnel policies and procedures.
Before entering consultancy he held various senior personnel posts in a Times Top 100 organisation, set up and managed the organisation’s first training function covering some 12,000 employees and was at the same time the personnel manager to 1,000 headquarters staff. During this time he carried out a substantial amount of consultation and negotiation with a variety of trade unions, particularly in relation to the harmonisation of terms and conditions of employment, the introduction of productivity schemes, and changes to organisation structures.
He has detailed knowledge of the application of employment law and is author of Essential Facts – Employment, Croner’s, and The Recruitment and Selection Handbook published by Gee. He is author of Working with Unions published by Financial Times/Prentice Hall and Current Practice, Good Practice – Guidelines for good practice on pay and remuneration for senior posts in the voluntary sector, published by the NCVO, Organizational Behaviour and Design, Human Resource Management, The Redundancy Survival Guide, The Employer’s Handbook and The Handbook of Model Job descriptions all published by Kogan Page and endorsed by the IoD. He has contributed to other publications such as Risk Management also published by Kogan Page. He has been involved in the development of several HR software products and has contributed to a number of government reports.
Barry is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and has an MA in Management Studies.
