From Risk to Resilience A Leadership Journey Rooted in Governance
Governance, risk, and compliance have been at the heart of my career – and completing the IoD Certificate in Company Direction has been a defining step in strengthening that foundation.
Over the past two decades, I’ve built a career at the intersection of finance, regulation, and operational leadership always with a focus on doing things properly, sustainably, and with purpose. Completing the IoD Certificate in Company Direction has been a meaningful milestone in that journey, reinforcing my commitment to strong governance and strategic leadership.
My early career was grounded in finance, where I developed a deep understanding of controls, reporting, and accountability. But I quickly found myself drawn to the broader systems that underpin business success risk, compliance, and the frameworks that support sound decision-making. That curiosity led me to the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, where I gained invaluable insight into regulatory expectations and the importance of proportionality and transparency.
Since then, I’ve held senior roles across the insurance sector, including at Southern Rock and The AA Underwriting Insurance Company. As a GFSC-approved function holder, I’ve led risk and compliance functions, supported Boards in navigating complex regulatory environments, and helped shape operational strategies that align with both business goals and regulatory standards.
What drives me is creating cultures where governance is not just a requirement, but a value. Where risk is seen as a strategic tool, and compliance is embedded in how we operate not just what we report I’ve always believed that strong leadership is about clarity, consistency, and the ability to bring people with you through change.
The IoD Certificate has helped crystallise that belief. It’s given me the opportunity to step back, reflect, and refine my approach to leadership through the lens of a director. It’s also strengthened my ability to contribute at the highest levels of decision-making, with a broader understanding of boardroom dynamics, strategic oversight, and long-term value creation. While I haven’t yet taken on a directorship role, that’s where I’m headed. The Certificate has reinforced my readiness to contribute at Board level not just as a subject matter expert, but as a strategic leader. As I continue to grow in my career, I remain passionate about governance that empowers, risk management that enables growth, and compliance that supports innovation.
The next Role of the Director and the Board course will be held in Gibraltar on 10-11 November 2025. For further details please contact Valentina Skachkova.
