A big picture view of the UK tech industry

There is major disruption going on, says Julian David, CEO of TechUK. Offering a Big Picture view of the UK tech industry at the recent IoD Digital Strategy Summit, David emphasised the rapid escalation of the ‘internet of things’, the significant opportunities presented by the onset of 5G, and the burgeoning virtual reality market.

However as with all evolving industries, and as more and more industries rely on data and analytics, British companies need to be aware of the challenges. To maintain trust with customers, suppliers and stakeholders, businesses must consider what data they have, why they have it, and on whose behalf they hold and utilise it. And they have until May’s GDPR deadline to get a handle on this data.

David also stressed the need for the UK to improve its digital skills, particularly teaching children and getting more women coding, as well as ensuring older workers aren’t left behind.
