IoD responds to new partnership with China

Responding to the launch of a new partnership with China, as part of the Prime Minister’s visit to Beijing, Jonathan Geldart, Director General of the Institute of Directors, said:

“The new collaboration agreements that the UK and China negotiated in Beijing this week represent a great step towards long-term partnership. In an increasingly turbulent world, constructive cooperation matters more than ever. There are clear opportunities for mutually respectful engagement that can deliver benefits for both our economies.

“Differences of opinion on certain issues will of course remain and, in some cases, we may have to agree to disagree. But as China advances rapidly in sectors such as wind, solar, electric vehicles and other green technologies, it is right that the UK looks to deepen collaboration. By combining the intellectual strength of our universities, research institutions and innovative businesses with the capabilities of our Chinese counterparts, we can build solid commercial partnerships that serve our shared long-term interests.

“The UK offers a unique proposition as a global hub for investment. Our strong governance environment, stable regulatory framework and robust rule of law provide the certainty and confidence that Chinese businesses need to invest and prosper alongside British talent.

“As a package, the commitments represent a first step, offering a great foundation for future relations. Agreements proposed, such as relaxing visa rules, a feasibility study to explore bilateral services cooperation, and greater recognition of professional qualifications, will improve market access opportunities for businesses looking to take advantage of international demand.

“Maintaining open channels of dialogue and practical connectivity is essential. Restoring direct commercial flights to key Chinese cities would be a further important step in supporting business mobility and strengthening commercial ties.”
