Institute of Directors recognised as one of the UK’s Best Workplaces in Charity & Not-For-Profit™!

The IoD’s employees anonymously reported that the flexibility in working arrangements for colleagues makes the company a great place to work.

Last year the IoD implemented a company-wide bonus scheme for colleagues, based on overall performance of the business rather than individuals. This has meant that all colleagues feel like they are contributing equally no matter what role they undertake.

Alongside these programmes, the IoD has taken a keen interest in colleagues wellbeing, through the appointment of Mental Health First Aiders, the enabling of Wellbeing Days and a full suite of wellbeing and fitness programmes available to colleagues for free via our rewards platform.

Colleagues told us in the last Trust Index survey that:

• The change in the rewards/bonus scheme has been massive for the organisation, it’s instilled in us that we are all in it together and if we succeed, we all succeed
• We have such flexible working here which you would struggle to find elsewhere
• I believe that the goal of educating and empowering directors through our programmes to run their companies better helps me feel like the work I am completing is making the world better
• The company lives by its people and the commitment they show to the business and our members
• It’s the kind of organisation that pulls the team close, so that they care about the future of, not just their individual roles and departments, but the success of the business overall

Alongside its commitment to workplace culture, all colleagues have been given access to the IoD’s Chartered Director Programme, as they believe in living by example. The 2025 Best Workplaces in Charity & Not-For-Profit list is created using the anonymous feedback from employees working in the industry about their workplace experience.
Great Place To Work® UK administered their research-backed Trust Index© employee survey and analysed the responses of UK-based charity and not-for-profit sector employees to determine the Best Workplaces™ list. The surveys asked employees to comment on how their company supports their work-life balance, sense of fulfilment, job satisfaction, psychological safety and financial security. Evaluations also included an assessment of how well the organisation was able to deliver consistency of their employee experience across all departments and seniority levels.

Analysis of the sector employee survey responses found:

• 86% of employees at the UK’s Best Workplaces for Charity & Not-For-Profit say “When I look at what we accomplish, I feel a sense of pride” compared to 78% at a typical company in this sector.
• 87% of employees at the UK’s Best Workplaces for Charity & Not-For-Profit say “I’m proud to tell others I work here” compared to 69% at a typical company in this sector.
