Institute of Directors appoints new Chair
The Institute of Directors has appointed John Browett as the new Chair of its Board after a comprehensive search process.
Mr Browett takes over from Patrick Macdonald, whose three-year term as Chair ended after the Institute’s AGM yesterday (Wednesday July 3). His appointment comes after a robust process overseen by the Nomination Committee which consists of members of the IoD Board and IoD Council.
Mr Browett, current chair of Octopus Group and fraud prevention organisation Cifas, also holds a number of other non-executive positions. During his extensive executive career, working with both large and smaller companies, he was chief executive of Dunelm, Dixons and Monsoon Accessorize as well as Senior Vice President of Retail at Apple and Group Operations Development Director at Tesco.
He joins as the IoD reported its strongest ever financial results and growth in membership for the first time for a number of years.
David Langworth, Chair of the IoD Council and chair of the Nominations Committee said: “I am delighted to welcome John to the IoD. He was clearly the exceptional candidate for the role and brings a wealth of business experience that will be invaluable as we move forward.
“John joins at a pivotal and exciting time for the Institute as we look to build on the growth in membership and stronger financial position.”
Mr Browett said: “I am deeply honoured to take over as Chair of the IoD. The Institute is once again in a stronger position after the excellent work that has been done over the last few years to modernise the organisation.
“As a truly members’ organisation, the IoD plays a hugely important role for its members both in terms of helping with professional development and as advocates on their behalf. I am excited to be taking over from Patrick at this point and look forward to helping continue the positive progress that has been made.”
Director General Jonathan Geldart also welcomed Mr Browett.
“John joins us as the Institute looks forward with confidence after the successful rebuilding work of recent years. We have a real opportunity to use this as a platform to build on our recent progress.
“I’m looking forward to working closely with John as we move on to the next stage of that development.”
John joined as Chair on 4 July 2024.
