In conversation with your Bucks and Milton Keynes IoD branch ambassadors Nigel Robinson

This week we meet Nigel Robinson, our ambassador for “Data Analytics”, IT and Cyber Security who has been an IoD member since 2005.

Please note that we chatted before the current crisis so some of these answers don’t relate to our current lockdown situation!

Hi Nigel, what one thing do you hope to achieve in your role?

I want to grow the understanding of some of the latest advances in IT and technology within our membership: with a specific focus on understanding their data assets, Cloud Infrastructure and Cyber security.

What prompted you join the IoD?

I joined the IoD in 2005 as it has an excellent reputation for Business Leadership and being key influencers in UK business. I participated as one of the first people to go through the Chartered Director programme.

What benefits have you seen from being a member of the IoD?

Excellent networking and use of the facilities at Pall Mall and on the telephone.

What’s your favourite way to answer the question “What do you do?”

I help organisations derive previously unknown insight from their data: helping understand their customers, operate more effectively and understand the business environment within which they operate.

When you’re not working, what would we find you doing?

Keeping fit and outdoors: running, cycling and walking in the region. When not doing that, spending time with my family, reading and I love travelling – particularly City Breaks.

What is your dream holiday?

I would love to do one of two things: fly a light aircraft around the Mediterranean with a focus on the Greek Islands *or* pinch my parents’ Sunseeker and sail that around the Med.

What’s your hidden talent?

I enjoy running marathons and participating in triathlons.

If you could give your 18 year old self some advice, what would it be?

Learn a foreign language, travel and work abroad – there is no substitute for learning overseas customs and business practices.

Thank you Nigel!  Next time, we’ll be meeting Clare Winter our ambassador for Young Directors.  See you then.
