The LABS: Marketing for Non-Marketing Directors programme is a series of interactive, board-level sessions that equip Directors with the knowledge and confidence to challenge and guide their marketing directors and colleagues, ensuring stronger governance and more effective strategic decision-making. Each LAB stands alone as a 1.5 or 3-hour event, but together they form a comprehensive journey. Directors who attend will receive an IoD Certificate of Completion and CPD accreditation.

Mark Smith is a strategic brand consultant, executive coach and experienced lecturer who helps directors understand the true commercial value of marketing.
As founder of award-winning consultancy The Brand Strategy, he works with leadership teams to align brand, customer experience and sustainability as levers for long-term business growth.
Mark brings over 20 years’ cross-sector experience, partnering with boards to transform marketing from a support function into a strategic driver. He is a trained executive coach with a particular focus on developing brand and customer aware leadership teams.
Alongside his consultancy work, Mark lectures in brand strategy and marketing at Nottingham Business School, where he bridges theory and practice for emerging business leaders. He is currently completing a PhD on how marketing is understood and used inside the boardroom, giving him a unique, research-backed perspective on the disconnect between marketers and directors.
A Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Mark is a frequent speaker on brand, marketing effectiveness and ESG alignment. Known for his straight-talking, commercially focused style, he helps directors cut through the jargon to understand how brand and marketing can drive cultural alignment, differentiation and long-term value.
