The IoD takes the health and safety of our attendees and speakers very seriously. As you know we have been monitoring the status of Covid-19 and the government’s advice closely. In light of the current outbreak in the UK, and the developments within the last couple of weeks, we have taken the decision to move this course online.


The IoD is here to help you be the best leader you can be. Whether you’ve been a director for days or decades, there is always something new to discover about the role, your responsibilities, and the business world around you. In an economy that’s changing by the day, it’s never been more important to be on top of your game with professional development. 

To help you understand your role as a director, and future-proof your board and organisation, we’ve developed our Professional Director Series – bringing accessible and digestible CPD to your region on the topics that matter. The whole series – wherever you are in the UK - is mapped to the IoD Director Competency Framework, keeping your learning relevant, up-to-date and in line with your professional development ambitions. Whether you’re embarking on the Certificate in Company Direction or are a qualified Chartered Director, this CPD series is the perfect accompaniment – or refresher – to your existing knowledge.

You’ll also be part of a group of leaders from organisations of all shapes and sizes across the country, giving you the opportunity to connect, learn from each other, share your setbacks and successes, and encourage each other at the most senior level. Although the course is online you will still have the opportunity for peer to peer learning through interactivity on camera during the regular breaks, breakout sessions and group work.

The morning session will include two carefully designed courses on 'Strategic Decision Making' and 'Leading from the Chair'. The afternoon session will explore the popular courses 'Step to the Top' and 'Company purpose and ESG – driving long-term value'.

CPD Workshop Details 

Leading from the Chair - Morning Course 1

The role of the chair in an organisation is often misunderstood and regularly becomes confused with the role of the CEO. A chair’s role is far more than organising and managing the process of board meeting execution. Analysis of successful organisations has revealed that the leadership role of the chair is vital in order to ensure that the board as a team makes decisions and discharges its duties and obligations effectively. This session will clarify the chair’s leadership role in order to unleash the value creating potential of the board.

Having completed this session, delegates will be able to:

1. Outline the purpose of the chair and their role and responsibilities, in particular how their role differs from the role of the CEO 
2. Describe the skills, attributes and characteristics of an effective chair 
3. Identify how the chair can help to create an effective board and add value both in and out of the boardroom

Strategic Decision Making - Morning Course 2

The aim of this workshop is to equip delegates with ways of strengthening their strategic decision-making ability. In a COVID/post-COVID world, being able to make great decisions around strategy has probably never been more important. This workshop provides insight into the ingredients of effective strategic decision-making and offers practical solutions to the main challenges.

This workshop is based on contemporary research into how directors and leadership teams make effective strategic decisions, and draws on global insight from entrepreneurs and thought- leaders. 

Having completed this session, delegates should be able to:

1. Identify the ingredients of and challenges around effective strategic decision-making
2. Apply techniques to strengthen the quality of strategic decisions


Step to the Top - Afternoon Course 1

This workshop will enable the participants to determine whether they are ready (and willing!) to take the step to the boardroom. 

Sometimes people find themselves presented with the opportunity to become a board member – perhaps on the basis of either being good at something else (e.g. being a senior manager, an accountant or an engineer) or perhaps by accident! Often, no consideration is given to whether they are board-ready or capable. 

This interactive workshop explores what it means to be a director, the duties and obligations that the role brings with it and how it differs from being a manager in an organisation. It also examines the skills, knowledge and mind-set that are required of an effective board member and provide delegates who wish to make the leap to the boardroom with signposting to areas where they can get further support and training in order to develop into confident and effective directors.

The workshop is delivered by experienced board directors who, drawing on their personal experiences, will provide the delegates with a practical insight into life as a board member of both large and small companies.

By the time the delegate has completed the session, they should be able to: 

1. Assess whether they are ready and willing to meet the challenge of becoming a board director. 
2. Identify the gaps in their knowledge and expertise, and understand how they need to develop in order to become a confident and effective director.

Company purpose and ESG – driving long-term value - Afternoon course 2

Recent years have seen significant changes in the way stakeholders expect organisations to present and run their business, requiring the boards of companies to re-evaluate their purpose within an environmental, social and governance (ESG) context. Boards need a firm grasp of value creation that satisfies all stakeholders, internal and external.

This workshop explores how meaningful purpose statements at the heart of an organisation’s business model bring benefits and drive long-term value creation. It also examines what influences stakeholder demand and introduces different reporting and disclosure frameworks that will help organisations report and communicate their ESG credentials effectively to their stakeholders.    

Having completed this session, delegates should be able to: 

1. Recognise the importance of meaningful purpose statements in delivering benefits and driving long-term value creation
2. Appraise different approaches to communicating and reporting ESG to stakeholders

Jean PoussonIoD Course Leader
Jean Pousson

Business experience

Jean Pousson brings 20 years of management consultancy, training, facilitation and coaching experience to the table and is the lead course leader for Finance for Non-Financial Directors at the IoD. This follows a 15-year banking career with Barclays where he spent many years assessing risks of small to medium sized businesses and then larger corporations. Jean has also sat on many boards and has directed a number of change initiatives.

Professional credentials and training experience
Jean holds a business degree and a business diploma from the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa) and a few other business diplomas including one from the University of Warwick. Jean’s experience in dealing with numerous businesses, boards and executives over the years (both within the UK and internationally) makes him very well placed to assist directors with their developmental needs.

In his capacity as an IoD course leader, Jean has worked with organisations such as ACAS, Ministry of Defence, Standard Life, Serco, Lloyds Banking Group, Pizza Express, Fujitsu Siemens, Callaway Golf and Greene King plc. He has also worked with numerous small to medium-sized businesses across a wide variety of industries.
