Welcome back to that time of year when new uniforms have been bought, pencils have been sharpened, new shoes have been shined....and you have got the kids sorted for school as well.
The summer holidays seem like an awful long time ago, and those conversations around the kitchen and boardroom table where we put things off until “after the holidays”, or “when we go back to work/school”, are all redundant.
Up here in the north-east however we have been busy all the way through summer… The team has been working extraordinarily hard and with its usual efficiency, now very ably assisted by our new recruit Kazi Sajeed , Communications and Marketing Assistant
We have lots of activities to report - all over and above even our usual productive efforts… We are getting on with forward planning for our annual Business Leaders’ Dinner which is now going to be on April 4, save that date for some extremely exciting, unusual and groundbreaking news from us.
We are also partnering up with Barclays for our first women’s conference, on the back of a very successful series of events. These events have been run through the good offices of Rachel Bell at Barclays here in the North-East, and have developed from one international women’s day event to a series of event into something which Barclays, in conjunction with the IoD North East team, is turning into a much bigger and more impactful event. I am delighted that the incredibly energetic and enthusiastic Anne Cuthbertson, IoD committee member and chair of the IoD’s NE hugely successful Women on Board group, is spearheading this particular initiative, again watch this space for more details.
I am looking forward immensely to our very first in the new series of Teesside Business Leaders’ Lunches, run in partnership with our long-term friends at Endeavour Law, and starting off with a keynote from the ever- impressive Professor Jane Turner, Vice Pro-Chancellor, Teesside University
We have a full house for our next event at Wynyard Hall, again ably supported by Endeavour Law, and having our wonderful Head of Policy Alli Renison attend bringing even more prestige to the event which will investigate the possible impact of Brexit as that agenda develops, on the North East and North-East businesses.
There are many other activities planned, from a behind-the-scenes show and tell at Greggs, which I am very definitely booked in for, as well as an event up at the airport looking at planes trains and automobiles and the transport agenda in the North East.
More than enough to keep everybody busy as the new term kicks in, and I for one am looking forward immensely to meeting IoD friends and colleagues - old and new - at all of these. I am very proud of the immense amount of effort that it has taken to create this astonishing calendar of events and would like to pay particular tribute to Sukie for her efforts across the whole of the summer and making sure that we keep the momentum, as Brexit rolls nearer and the North East Business community comes together to collaborate on these and helps us all to grow stronger.
