Responding to the Prime Minister’s speech this afternoon on the Brexit negotiations, Stephen Martin, Director General of the Institute of Directors, said:
“Every negotiation is full of ups and downs, and it was inevitable that thorny issues would come to a head.
“Both sides know there is too much at stake – not least for the Irish border – to abandon the withdrawal agreement. A ‘keep calm and carry on’ approach is what is needed to break the impasse.
“We are, however, delighted that the Government has heeded the call from the IoD and others to make a commitment to protect the rights of EU citizens here in the event of no-deal. We look forward to receiving more details as soon as possible so businesses and individuals have one less uncertainty hanging over their heads.
“This is a positive step forward and we would hope the EU and its member states reciprocate in kind if they are serious about putting people first.”
