Government ‘has run out of excuses’ for delaying airport expansion

11 May 2016

Outside shot of the front of 116 Pall MallResponding to the announcement by Heathrow Airport of their pledges to meet environmental commitments set by the Davies Commission, Simon Walker, Director General of the Institute of Directors, said:

“The Government has run out of excuses for not delivering Britain’s much-needed aviation capacity. Now that the Davies Commission has looked at all the options, and the Mayoral election is out of the way, it is imperative that the Government announces where this crucial infrastructure will be built before we reach the summer recess.

“Business is crying out for expanded capacity. It is high time the Government stops kicking this issue into the long grass and makes a decision. When businesses are doing their best to expand, it’s only right that politicians support them by getting shovels in the ground.”

The IoD surveyed over 1,000 of its member in November 2014 on the subject of aviation expansion;

•  More than three-quarters (76%) had flown for business in the past 12 months, and there are no signs of demand abating, with 8 in 10 expecting to travel as much or more in future;

•  Only 6% say current airport capacity is enough to provide flights to an extensive range of global destinations;

•  The top two factors for members when considering where a new runway should be built are expansion of services to new markets (54%), followed by capacity for more point-to-point flights (42%).

•  Forced into a straight choice between a new runway at Heathrow or Gatwick, 61% of IoD members chose Heathrow, and 39% Gatwick, although the IoD believes both have good cases for expansion.

1,149 members of the IoD responded to the survey between November24 – December 6 2014. The IoD’s full submission to the Airports Commission can be found here.
