flagsWith a new Prime Minister now in post, the planning cycle in government will be cranking up again from the beginning of August after a pause over the last few months.

While the IoD has and will continue to make clear the importance to business of avoiding a no-deal outcome, it is committed to helping directors and their companies become as prepared as possible for every scenario. The IoD engages extensively with Government on Brexit planning, sitting on a number of important working groups in Whitehall on policy areas ranging from customs and border management to immigration and tariff policy development. Recently, our Head of EU and Trade Policy Allie Renison was appointed to the Government’s new technical advisory expert panel which is exploring alternative arrangements to the “backstop” for the Irish border.

Allie and her colleagues are in the midst of updating the IoD’s main Brexit planning document, which will be reissued this summer and reviewed in the run-up to 31 October. We are working with HMRC and other parts of government to make directors aware of their new phased communication plan around no-deal preparation, and will have a full slate of Brexit planning events starting from September, including some one-to-ones with key government officials.

To ensure you can get the most from this work, we encourage you to sign up to our new mailing list for IoD members with a particular interest in Brexit and related planning. Through this, you may receive emails on an ad-hoc basis from Allie and the policy team about relevant stakeholder events, detailed planning queries, facilitating better interaction between business and relevant authorities both in the UK and the EU. The IoD will also be hosting a special customs working group within HMRC on preparing for Brexit in September, and we are reserving a very limited number of places for members.
